More Than Just Bad Behavior: Hypersexuality Disorder in the News

Arnold Schwarzenegger. Anthony Weiner. Tiger Woods. The list goes on and on, prompting no less distinguished an organization than the American Psychiatric Association to explore a possible new label for an increasingly visible problem: Hypersexuality Disorder.

Impulse Treatment Center (ITC), a leader in the field of treatment of sexually compulsive individuals, their partners and families since 1985, is currently participating in a research study led by UCLA’s Dr. Rory C. Reid. Once completed, ITC and UCLA researchers will look to science to add a diagnosis of Hypersexuality Disorder to the 2012 Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM V).

Much like alcoholism at the turn of the 20th century, compulsive sexual behavior just doesn’t go away, no matter how it’s reviled. After decades of bad press, it still remains unrecognized as a legitimate problem.

Not everyone who makes bad choices around sex has a disorder, but an official acknowledgment by the mental health community is hoped to aid in the development of assessment and treatment strategies. At present, the primary criteria for the proposed diagnosis of Hypersexuality Disorder includes the following:

A. Over a period of at least six months, recurrent and intense sexual fantasies, sexual urges, or sexual behaviors in association with three or more of the following five criteria:
